First and early edition set of this history of the Union Navy during the Civil War, richly illustrated with steel-engraved portraits, wood-engraved plates and maps, and nine lovely chromolithographs of ships, including one of the famous battle between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimac.

The Union Navy played a decisive role in the Civil War, and Boynton's engaging history traces its development of ironclads and the imposition of the all-important naval blockade on Southern ports and rivers. Volume I first edition; Volume II first published in 1868. Not in Eicher.
