Alexander Stephens

INSCRIBED BY THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE CONFEDERACY, ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS

STEPHENS, Alexander H. The Reviewers Reviewed; A Supplement to the "War Between the States," Etc. With an Appendix in Review of "Reconstruction," So Called. New York: D. Appleton, 1872. Octavo, original tan cloth. $750.

First edition of the former Confederate vice president's response to critics of his previous work, Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States, inscribed: "To Edward F. Stokes, This volume is inscribed with his kindest regards by Alexander H. Stephens, Liberty Hall, Crawfordville Ga. 28th June 1872."

Just a couple years after the fall of the Confederacy, the former vice president, Alexander Stephens, published a well-reasoned constitutional defense of secession called Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States. The book sparked controversy on both sides of the Mason-Dixon and the two sides alternately lauded and lamented the strength of his argument. Two years later, Stephens published this book, individually responding to some of the more prominent critics of his earlier work. With publisher's advertisements. This copy is inscribed to Edward F. Stokes, likely the South Carolina colonel who served for the Confederacy through nearly the entire Civil War. Stokes, a Harvard and University of Virginia graduate, went on to become a prestigious constitutional lawyer and was widely regarded as one of the best lawyers in Greenville, South Carolina.

Only occasional foxing to interior, wear and toning to original cloth. An extremely good copy.
