“AUTHOR’S AUTOGRAPH EDITION” OFSKYWARD, ONE OF 500 SIGNED BY COMMANDER BYRD AND INCLUDING FABRIC FROM THEJOSEPHINE FORD, THE PLANE IN WHICH HE MADE HIS 1926 ARCTIC FLIGHT

BYRD, Richard E. Skyward. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1928. Octavo, original three-quarter blue cloth gilt, blue paper boards, uncut. $1200.

Signed limited first edition of Byrd’s account of his aviation adventures, number 252 of only 500 copies signed by him, with two pieces of cloth from the plane in which he flew to the North Pole in May 1926.

Although perhaps best remembered for his later polar expeditions, Byrd was also a pioneer naval aviator. He explored 30,000 square miles of Greenland by air in 1925, made his much-celebrated and controversial flight to the North Pole the next year and, in 1927, proved the viability of commercial travel by multiengine airplane with a transatlantic flight that ended in a dramatic, emergency off-shore landing. Affixed to its front pastedown, this book contains two mounted small strips of fabric that covered the Fokker Trimotor the Josephine Ford, the plane in which pilot Floyd Bennett and Byrd, as navigator, made their 15-1/2 hour round trip flight to the Arctic on May 9, 1926. Both men received the Congressional Medal of Honor for the achievement. With 58 illustrations, including ten photogravures and folding map. With publisher's signature to limitation page. Without glassine or publisher's slipcase. Spence 224. Books on Ice 8.13 See Fitzgerald 128.
