First American edition of this richly illustrated survey of Italy, with 72 full-page wood-engraved illustrations and more than 200 in-text illustrations, handsomely bound.

Editor T. Adolphus Trollope, older brother of the novelist Anthony and a novelist, journalist, and historian, "hardly ever wrote a dull page" (DNB). He lived in Italy for over 40 years (King Victor Emmanuel awarded him the order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus) and his house in Florence, Villino Trollope, was a meeting-place for many English and foreign authors in Italy, including Dickens, George Eliot, and the Brownings. Divided into three sections: "From the Alps to the Arno," by Karl Stieler, "From the Arno to the Tiber," by Edward Paulus, and "From the Tiber to Etna," by Woldemar Kaden. First published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1877.

Faint and narrow marginal dampstain toward rear of volume, not touching plates or text; rubbing to extremities of sound morocco. An extremely good copy.
