Samuel Carter Hall

HALL’S IRELAND, PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED BY WILLIAM BARTLETT, HANDSOMELY BOUND

(IRELAND) HALL, Samuel Carter. Ireland: Its Scenery, Character, &c. A New Edition. London: Hall, Virtue, and Co., circa 1858. Three volumes. Royal octavo, contemporary full tan polished calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, brown and green morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers and edges. $3200.

Early expanded edition of this picturesque survey of Ireland, with over 600 illustrations, including engraved vignette title pages, 101 full-page steel-engravings by William Henry Bartlett, 18 color-outlined maps of various counties, and hundreds of in-text wood-engravings, in lovely full contemporary calf-gilt bindings.

Samuel Carter Hall served as editor of The Art Journal, The Amulet, The New Monthly Magazine, and The British Magazine, "but is best known by his share in an illustrated work on Ireland, written in conjunction with his wife" (Allibone I, 766). These profusely illustrated volumes survey the history, scenery and folklore of the counties of Ireland. British landscape artist William Bartlett became famous for his views of major sites of interest to tourists— natural wonders, cityscapes and architectural monuments, which appeared in several series of travel volumes issued in the 19th century by publisher George Virtue. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Bartlett actually traveled to all of the places he depicted. First published by Bradbury & Evans in 1841-43 with only 48 plates; the firm of Hall, Virtue was founded in 1849. BMC XI, 338-339.

Text, plates and maps quite clean and fine, only mild toning along edges of bindings, git bright. A beautiful set in fine condition.
