Washington, D.C.: United States Government Printing Office, (1964). 26 volumes. Octavo, original gilt-stamped blue cloth. $3500.

First edition of the complete set of 26 volumes documenting the Warren Commission's investigation into the Kennedy assassination, with thousands of pages of testimony and photographic images including a frame-by-frame display of the Zapruder film, a fine set in original cloth.

"On Nov. 29, 1963, just seven days after he became President of the U.S. because of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson issued Executive Order No. 11,130, setting up a blue-ribbon commission, headed by Chief Justice Earl Warren, to investigate each and every aspect of the national tragedy" (Time). The Commission's investigation is thoroughly documented in these 26 volumes, featuring thousands of pages of testimony and interviews, and thickly illustrated with images of official documents, police and FBI reports, evidence, correspondence and photographic images. Notably included is a frame-by-frame display of the famous Zapruder film, which "became fused" with the assassination: "'so much so that Kennedy's death became virtually unimaginable without Zapruder's film.'" In Zapruder frame 255 here "the president can be seen reaching for his neck, where the bullet exited" (Newsweek). Exhibit No. 392 records the arrival of Kennedy and his wife at the hospital, noting: "The President's wife refused to take off her bloody glove, clothes… She took her wedding ring off and placed it on one of the President's fingers." The Commission presented its Report "to the President on September 24, 1964. The publication of the Report was soon followed by the publication of the 26 volumes of the Commission's Hearings" (National Archives). The Commission's conclusion, which determined Kennedy was killed by a rifle fired by Oswald, remains one of the most controversial in recent American history. First edition: with no statement of edition or printings on copyright page. As issued without dust jackets.

A pristine set in fine condition.
