Hints on the Game of Golf

Horace G. Hutchinson

"IN 1885 GOLF WAS AN ECCENTRICITY AFFECTED BY A FEW; BY 1890 IT HAD BECOME A GENERAL FASHION": 1886 FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST INSTRUCTIONAL GOLF BOOK

HUTCHINSON, Horace G. Hints on the Game of Golf. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1886. Small thin octavo, original green pictorial cloth; pp. 69. $3200.

First edition of the first instructional book on golf, and the first title written by the prolific golf author Horace Hutchinson.

"It is said, I believe by Horace Hutchinson, that 'in 1885 golf was an eccentricity affected by a few; by 1890 it had become a general fashion.' He was referring too the spread of golf from Scotland to England. Certainly no account of the literature of this era would be complete without acknowledging the contributions made by Hutchinson. His first book was 1886; a small, thin book of instruction which he sent to William Blackwood, the Edinburgh publisher, for consideration… The book was published and went into 14 editions" (Donovan and Murdoch, 13). This slim volume is organized in four parts: Introductory; Advice to Beginners; Hints to Golfers of Riper Years; and The Miseries of Golf. Donovan & Murdoch 3100. Owner ink signatures on half title and title page; a few penciled marginal markings.

Quite scarce and desirable in near-fine condition.
