Atlas of the Lewis and Clark Expedition

Meriwether Lewis

LARGE FOLIO ATLAS VOLUME FOR MOULTON'S COMPREHENSIVE EDITION OF LEWIS AND CLARK’S JOURNALS, ONE OF ONLY 100 COPIES SIGNED BY MOULTON

(LEWIS and CLARK) MOULTON, Gary E., editor. Atlas of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Lincoln and London: University of Nebraska, (1999). Atlas folio (14 by 20 inches), original navy cloth, original half morocco clamshell box. $1200.

Limited second printing of the atlas volume to accompany Gary Moulton’s esteemed and comprehensive edition of the journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition, with 126 full-page maps. This is copy number 3 of only 100 copies printed for the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation and signed by Moulton on the limitation page, in handsome original clamshell box.

Gary Moulton's 13-volume edition gathered all journals and related manuscript materials from the Corps of Discovery. "This 22-year-long project is the current standard reference text for the expedition" (Beckham, Erickson 5h.1). This atlas volume contains fine reproductions of all manuscript maps made on the expedition, as well as of the printed maps made after Lewis and Clark's return. The first edition was published in 1983. The final volume of the 13-volume set was not published until 2001; this second printing may have been necessary as demand for this comprehensive scholarly edition increased during the course of publication. With a letter on letterhead of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, also signed by Moulton and by the Executive Director of the Foundation laid in, thanking the recipient of this copy for his "exceedingly thoughtful contribution to help fund this printing of the Atlas."

Fine condition.
