FIRST EDITION OF MY LIFE WITH MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., WARMLY INSCRIBED BY CORETTA SCOTT KING

KING, Coretta Scott. My Life with Martin Luther King, Jr. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, (1969). Octavo, original cream cloth, original dust jacket. $1250.

First edition of these memoirs about the private and public lives of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his family, warmly inscribed by the author: "With all good wishes Coretta Scott King," and with an owner gift inscription to the Slifkins, who were active in the civil rights protests in Chapel Hill in the 1960s.

"The First Lady of the Civil Rights Movement," Coretta Scott King here chronicles a life in which she "overcame tragedy, held her family together and became an inspirational presence around the world" (New York Times). With "First Edition" on copyright page. Illustrated with 16 pages of black-and-white photographic images. Blockson 3420. Brignano 147. This copy also features a gift inscription by an unidentified owner reading: "To the Slifkins with best wishes for success in the fight for Human Dignity for all people. Yours for equality, peace & love. E—- & K—-." Lawrence and Miriam Slifkin were active in the civil rights protests in Chapel Hill during the 1960s. Lawrence Slifkin was a member of the physics faculty at U.N.C., while his wife, Miriam, was founder of the Chapel Hill branch of N.O.W. and was heavily engaged in other activities supporting women's rights.

Book near-fine, with only a few faint spots of soiling to interior and toning to spine. Dust jacket extremely good, with stray white marks to rear panel, wear to extremities, and a bit of sunning to spine. A desirable inscribed copy with interesting provenance.
