They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

Horace Mccoy

"SOMETHING MAY HAPPEN TO YOU THAT YOU THINK HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE, THAT YOU THINK IS BRAND NEW, BUT YOU ARE MISTAKEN"

MCCOY, Horace. They Shoot Horses, Don't They? New York: Simon and Schuster, 1935. Octavo, original tan cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $9500.

First edition of McCoy’s rare and important first novel.

McCoy began writing a short story titled "Marathon Dance" after he moved to southern California in early 1931. He later retitled the story "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" and wrote at least three different manuscript versions that varied in length from 3500 to 6000 words. In 1932 and 1933 McCoy submitted the story to magazines, but it was rejected for reasons of length and profanity. McCoy then expanded the story into a novel and continued to work on it until early in 1935, when Simon and Schuster accepted the novel for publication, and it was published on July 25, 1935. The novel was turned into an acclaimed film in 1969, directed by Sidney Pollack and starring Jane Fonda, Michael Sarrazin, Susannah York and Gig Young (who won an Oscar for his role as the dance marathon promoter).

Book in excellent condition, rare dust jacket bright and lovely, with most minor wear to spine extremities and one short closed tear to rear panel. Rare, particularly in this condition.
