This photograph offers a humorous glimpse of two young African-American boys growing up in Philadelphia. Shot at the Rittenhouse Square fountain, the image depicts one boy kissing the fountain's bronze statue ("Duck Girl" by Paul Manship), while his friend or same-age relative laughs at his audacity. The margin bears the signature of Jack T. Franklin, an acclaimed Philadelphia photographer known for his images of Black life in Philadelphia. He also painstakingly chronicled the Civil Rights Movement and all of its major figures. Over 500,000 of Franklin's photographs and negatives are housed at the African American Museum in Philadelphia.
