"If we still sacrificed to the household gods the cat would have an altar in every house, of the poor and of the rich. It is the most gentle, amiable, and faithful of guests. Poets, dreamers, philosophers, have all admired its proud independence, its insinuating graces, the mystery of its purring, and the gleam of its eye." Ronner was a 19th-century Dutch painter widely known and loved for her charming paintings of cats and dogs. Text translated from the French of Marius Vachon by Clara Bell. Bookplate of the Baroness Hothfield.

Minor, uniform darkening to cloth. Infrequent faint foxing, closed tear to one leaf of text expertly repaired (page 33). Photogravures fine, impressions crisp. An excellent copy.
