People's Rights

Winston Churchill

A VERY RARE EARLY CHURCHILL TITLE: THE PEOPLE’S RIGHTS, 1910 FIRST EDITION, IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS

CHURCHILL, Winston. The People's Rights. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1910. Octavo, original yellow pictorial paper wraps. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase and a clamshell box. $4000.

First edition, first state of one of Churchill’s scarcest early titles, in fragile original wrappers.

In 1910, Churchill was Home Secretary, and he and his mentor, Chancellor of the Exchequer David Lloyd George, published three books advertising their agenda, as part of the campaign for the 1910 elections: The People's Budget, The People's Insurance, and The People's Rights. The first two were written by Lloyd George, and the last by Churchill. Written in a question and answer format, this work represents a distillation of Churchill's December 1909 speeches, and covers issues such as abolishing the House of Lords, balancing the budget, and encouraging free trade. This copy first state, with an index and one appendix. Published simultaneously with a cloth copy. Woods A16. Langworth 96.

Text mildly tanned, as usual, with a touch of wear to text block corners. Original wrappers expertly restored. A very good copy, scarce and desirable.
