One Soldier's Story

Bob Dole

"DOLE DESERVES ACCOLADES. SO, TOO, DOES HIS MEMOIR": FIRST EDITION OF ONE SOLDIER'S STORY, SIGNED BY SENATOR ROBERT DOLE

DOLE, Bob. One Soldier's Story. A Memoir. (New York): HarperCollins, (2005). Octavo, original black paper boards, decorative endpapers, original dust jacket. $250.

First edition of Senator Dole's "modestly titled, affecting memoir" (New York Times), signed on the title page by him.

Severely wounded in WWII, Senator Dole "spent 39 months in military hospitals… after he entered public life, his injuries made him one of the most visible members of the 'greatest generation,'" yet he typically resisted the distinction. "In One Soldier's Story, Dole's modestly titled, affecting memoir, he finally tells exactly what happened on Hill 913, and describes his long road to recovery. It is really two stories… the first is a harrowing tale of wartime courage and suffering. But he devotes nearly as much attention to describing his childhood years in Russell, which he describes as 'a quintessential Midwestern community'… Almost as an aside, when discussing his military discharge, he writes, 'It was noted in my military records that during my time in the Army I had earned two Bronze Stars with an oak-leaf cluster and two Purple Hearts.'" Senator Dole "represented Kansas in the Senate for more than 25 years, including 11 years as the chamber's Republican leader. He gave up his position as majority leader to run for the White House in 1996" (New York Times). "For all his reluctance to lay claim to hero or greatest-generation status, Dole deserves accolades. So, too, does his memoir" (Kirkus). First edition, first printing. Precedes the Easton Press signed limited edition. With frontispiece and eight pages of illustrations.

A fine copy.
