Work of Jesus Christ

John Bunyan

"CASTS CHRIST IN THE ROLE OF A BARRISTER WHO PLEADS THE CAUSE OF HIS CLIENTS, THE SAINTS, BEFORE THE SUPREME JUDGE IN THE HEAVENLY COURT": SCARCE 1725 EDITION OF BUNYAN'S THE WORK OF JESUS CHRIST

BUNYAN, John. The Work of Jesus Christ, as an Advocate, Clearly Explain'd, and Largely Improv'd, For the Benefit of all Believers. From 1 John ii. 1. And if any Man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous. London: John Marshall, 1725. 12mo, modern full black calf, red morocco spine label. $2500.

Sixth edition, first published in 1688 under the title of The Advocateship of Jesus Christ, with woodcut frontispiece portrait, attractively bound.

"Addressed to the newly converted, The Advocateship of Jesus Christ (1688) casts Christ in the role of a barrister who pleads the cause of his clients, the saints, before the supreme judge in the heavenly court. The similitude suggests that Bunyan's audience primarily comprised people of substance in London and other urban areas; judging from this book, he had continued to acquire legal knowledge since his initial imprisonment in 1660" (ODNB). Complete with portrait frontispiece (with advertisements on recto) and matching ESTC collation; without 12-page publisher's catalogue at rear, not called for by ESTC and only present in some copies. ESTC T58442.

Contents generally clean with headings and occasionally fore edges shaved; binding fine and attractive. A very good copy.
