Bat-Poet

Maurice Sendak

SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY OF THE BAT-POET, INSCRIBED BY SENDAK TO ISAAC BASHEVIS SINGER

(SENDAK, Maurice) JARRELL, Randall. The Bat-Poet. New York and London: Macmillan, 1965. Octavo, original blind-stamped pictorial cloth, original dust jacket. $1750.

First edition, third printing, signed and inscribed by Sendak to Isaac Bashevis Singer: "Jan '66. For Isaac Bashevis Singer–for the pleasure and great honor of working with him. Maurice Sendak."

The inscription refers to the collaboration between Sendak and Singer on the children's book Zlateh the Goat and Other Stories, published in 1966, written by Singer and illustrated by Sendak. Based on folk tales from his childhood, Zlateh the Goat was Singer's first book for children. The Bat-Poet, written by Jarrell, is a "funny, loveable, and truthful tale. Maurice Sendak has drawn pictures of the bat and his world is as unusual as the story itself. Only a few children's books delight a child's parents as much as they delight the child. The Bat-Poet is one of them" (dust jacket).

A fine copy of this wonderful book, with remarkable signed inscription.
