Early English edition of Buc'hoz's fascinating discourse on health and beauty.

Buc'hoz, a noted French physician and naturalist, compiled this work with "The chief Intention… to point out, and explain to the Fair-Sex, the Methods by which they may preserve and add to their Charms; and by which many natural Blemishes and Imperfections may be remedied or concealed." Among the cosmetic tips provided are methods to whiten the skin, remedies for facial pimples, cold creams, lip balms and breath sweeteners. Most interesting are the actual recipes for essences, cosmetics, etc. Though primarily intended for women, Buc'hoz provides practical natural health aids for both sexes, including techniques for preventing baldness, improving eyesight, caring for the teeth and gums, destroying fleas, removing stains and preparing snuff. An indispensable catalog of eighteenth century personal hygiene practices and home remedies. Early owner signature.

Dampstain affecting lower margins only, very light occasional foxing, upper corner of final leaves clipped but not affecting text. In handsome 18th-century calf-gilt.
