New york

LOVELY 1860 VERY LARGE FOLDING HAND-COLORED MAP OF NEW YORK, BROOKLYN, JERSEY CITY, HOBOKEN, AND HUDSON CITY, ORIGINALLY INCLUDED IN VALENTINE'S MANUAL OF THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK

(NEW YORK) DRIPPS, Matthew. Map of the Five Cities of New York, Brooklyn, Jersey City, Hoboken & Hudson City. New York: Valentine's Manual, 1860. Linen-backed hand-colored lithographic map, disbound, measuring 28 by 24 inches. $1000.

Wonderful very large folding hand-colored map of New York and its surrounding cities by accomplished cartographer Matthew Dripps, published as Plate 1 in the 1860 Valentine's Manual.

Created by respected Irish-born cartographer and map publisher Matthew Dripps, this map accurately depicts large swaths of New York and surrounding areas, from Central Park to the Bronx and from Bergen to Flushing Bay. Dripps also includes points of interests such as Rikers Island and the installations of Blackwell's (Roosevelt) Island including the work house, alms houses, and the lunatic asylum. Dripps' maps proved popular with New York government and were often used as reference material by City Council. This map was create for the 1860 edition of Valentine's Manual, an almanac and factbook concentrating on New York City. Valentine, the manual's compiler, often took care to insert important New York-related material in the text, such as this map, which he used as 1860's Plate 1.

Expert repair along top edge just barely affecting Westchester and the Bronx, a couple very faint spots, minor tears to a few folds. A most handsome and suitable for framing.
