Handbook of Baseball Drills

Carl Yastrzemski

BOLDLY SIGNED BY BOSTON RED SOX LEGEND CARL YASTRZEMSKI—"YAZ"

(CARL YASTRZEMSKI) ALLEN, Archie. Handbook of Baseball Drills. Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall, 1959. Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket. $300.

First edition of Allen's Handbook with over 200 drills to aid coaches in developing winning baseball teams, signed on the half title by Golden Glove winner "Yaz."

Carl Yastrzemski, known far and wide as "Yaz," spent his entire career of 23 years as outfielder for the Boston Red Sox. "Yaz played Fenway Park's 37-foot tall Green Monster like a violin" (Baseball Hall of Fame). "The 1967 season was the jewel of his career. In leading the Red Sox to the American League title, he won the Triple Crown with a .326 batting average, 44 home runs (tying Harmon Killebrew), and 121 RBIs. He also led the league in runs scored, hits, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage and was selected as the Most Valuable Player in the league" (Encyclopedia Britannica). Yaz won seven Golden Gloves and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989. Like Yaz, author Archie Allen was also an outfielder in his baseball career, which began at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Allen played professionally in the minor leagues before serving for three decades as the coach at Springfield, which named its baseball field after him. Allen's Handbook reflects his many years of experience with over 200 drills, including extensive as drills for players in all positions. First edition, first printing: with no statement of editions or printings on the copyright page. With over 100 in-text illustrations, and four pages of photographic illustrations.

Book fine; mild edge-wear, rubbing to bright near-fine dust jacket. A handsome copy with a very memorable association.
