“HOORAY FOR EYES!”: FIRST EDITION OF DR. SEUSS’ THE EYE BOOK

[SEUSS, Dr.] as LESIEG, Theodore. The Eye Book. New York: Random House, (1968). Small quarto, original pictorial cream paper boards, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket. $1350.

First edition of this book for beginning readers, written by Dr. Seuss and wonderfully illustrated by Roy McKie.

This was one of four easy-to-read titles released simultaneously in the "Bright & Early Book" series, an offshoot of the Beginner Book series directed at first grade- and Kindergarten-age readers. When Theodore Geisel contributed only the text to children's books, instead of both text and illustrations, he used the pseudonym Theodore LeSieg rather than Dr. Seuss. Some books, he explained, called "for more human characters than animals, and I've always been more comfortable with animals" (Cohen, 342). Younger & Hirsch 20.

Book with only slightest rubbing and soiling to extremities. Dust jacket with only minor wear to extremities. A near-fine copy.
