MOST EXCEPTIONAL MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT RELATED TO NAPOLEON'S EGYPT CAMPAIGN, BOLDLY SIGNED BY NAPOLEON AND WITH AN AUTOGRAPH NOTATION

NAPOLEON. Document signed. Paris, 1798. Single sheet of wove paper, measuring 8-1/2 by 11-/14 inches; floated, matted and framed with period hand-colored engraving of Napoleon, entire piece measures 21 by 19 inches. $7000.

Desirable 1798 manuscript document written in a secretarial hand pertaining to Napoleon's Egypt campaign and the resignation of the Commission Du Mobilier National, boldly signed as "Bonaparte" and with a few words in French by Napoleon.

This document pertains to the resignation of the Commission Du Mobilier National in Cairo during Napoleon's invasion of the Egypt. Shortly after dawn on May 19, 1798 a French fleet set sail for Egypt, carrying over 34,000 men plus animals, guns and munitions—led by the rising general Napoleon Buonaparte. The Directory considered it expedient to keep the ambitious general occupied, and while unable to invade England directly, he could certainly disrupt England's overland route to India. Several military blunders and defeats forced the French from Egypt in 1801. Additionally signed by Italian Minister Count Pagliano, and Magallon, French Consul-General of Cairo.

Signature quite bold. Very nearly fine condition, beautifully framed.
