AUSTEN’S NOVELS WITH COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS BY C.E. BROCK, BEAUTIFULLY BOUND

AUSTEN, Jane. The Works. London and New York: J.M. Dent & Sons, E.P. Dutton, 1922. Six volumes. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter navy calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, red morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $4800.

Later illustrated edition, with a colored frontispiece and 15 colored plates in each novel by C.E. Brock, beautifully bound by Bayntun.

Includes Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Mansfield Park, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey. Edwardian illustrator Charles Edmund Brock was a disciple of Victorian illustrator Hugh Thomson; Thomson had previously illustrated Austen's novels in line engravings, and Brock added color to Thomson's strong use of line. Brock's Austen illustrations were first published in 1898. Gilson E181. Bookplates.

Plates and text fine, spines mildly toned, only most minor wear to spine extremities. A beautiful set.
