First edition of Goodall's pioneering work, signed on the title page by her—"one of history's most impressive field studies; an instant animal classic" (Time)—in the very elusive original dust jacket.

Goodall "began a revolution in animal studies… She saw chimpanzees as clever creatures with personalities, emotions and minds. She discovered that they eat meat and use tools. She demonstrated that their behavior is affected by memory of the past and anticipation of the future… with the possible exception of Marie Curie, Goodall may be the best known woman scientist in history" (Peterson & Bekoff, eds. Jane Effect, 1-2). Goodall began her work at Gombe Reserve in Tanzania in 1960. It was there that she noticed a chimpanzee at a termite nest. As she writes herein: "I saw him carefully push a long grass stem down into a hole in the mound… it was obvious that he was actually using a grass stem as a tool… Previously man had been regarded as the only tool-making animal… Nevertheless my early observations of [chimpanzees'] toolmaking abilities convinced a number of scientists that it was necessary to redefine man in a more complex manner than before. Or else, as Louis Leakey put it, we should by definition have to accept the chimpanzee as Man."

To Stephen Jay Gould, Goodall's work is "one of the great achievements of 20th-century scholarship"(Introduction, 1988 edition). In the Shadow of Man is "one of history's most impressive field studies; an instant animal classic" (Time). "First Printing" on copyright page: corresponding code "w" indicates manufacturer, not priority. Issued the same year as the first English edition, no priority established. With full-page map and over 60 pages of illustrations, including 16 in color, from photographs by Hugo van Lawick. The two married in 1964 and divorced after ten years. Small owner signature.
