Abba Eban

"THE BEAT OF JEWISH HEARTS HAD EVERYWHERE BEEN QUICKENED BY THE PROSPECT OF RETURN": SIGNED BY ABBA EBAN

EBAN, Abba. An Autobiography. New York: Random House, (1977). Large octavo, original ivory cloth, original slipcase. $450.

Signed limited first edition of the memoir of the distinguished statesman and "voice of Israel," one of only 500 copies signed by the author, with 16 pages of photographic illustrations.

Raised and educated in England, Eban emigrated to Palestine after WWII. He played a key role in the negotiations with Britain that led to Israel's independent statehood. Among his many government positions, Eban served as Israel's first delegate to the United Nations, ambassador to the United States and Foreign Minister. An acclaimed author, Eban is best known for his histories of the Jews, including My People and Heritage: Civilization and the Jews (Encyclopedia Judaica VI:342-44). An Autobiography begins with Eban's childhood in England and covers his years at Cambridge, the advent of Israeli statehood and the ensuing wars with its Arab neighbors. Published the same year as the trade edition. As issued without dust jacket.

A fine copy.
