In 1989, Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against Salman Rushdie for his controversial Satanic Verses, which was inspired by the life of the Prophet Muhammad. "In February 1990, after a year spent in hiding under the protection of the British Security forces, Rushdie’s essay ‘In Good Faith’ reiterated his stance as a secular man, a man without religion, and one who was ‘not a Muslim'" (London Review of Books). Preceded by the British first edition of the same year.
