St. Mawr Together with The Princess

D.H. Lawrence

"THE LANDSCAPE LIVED, AND LIVED AS THE WORLD OF THE GODS, UNSULLIED AND UNCONCERNED"

LAWRENCE, D.H. St. Mawr. Together with The Princess. London: Martin Secker, (1925). Octavo, original brown cloth, uncut, original dust jacket; housed in a custom chemise and slipcase. $850.

First edition, first issue, in scarce original dust jacket.

The title novella and "The Princess" were drawn largely from Lawrence's experience in New Mexico and his tense relationship with patroness Mabel Dodge, a strong-willed American woman who "confessed that she wanted to seduce Lawrence, in the spiritual if not physical sense, and to subject him to her oppressive will" (Meyers, 286). Though she did not succeed in this endeavor, Dodge's continued efforts proved a heavy strain on the marriage between Lawrence and Frieda. First issue, bound in brown cloth and with "Contents" showing text beginning on page 9. Roberts A31. Small bookseller's label to rear pastedown.

Book fine with only minor foxing to text block fore-edge; scarce dust jacket unusually nice with only very minor soiling and most minor wear to extremities. An exceptionally lovely copy.
