BRAWLEY, Benjamin. Women of Achievement. No place: (Women's American Baptist Home Mission Society, 1919). Small octavo, original green cloth. $900.

First edition of this collection of biographies of African American women, by the author of numerous acclaimed books on African Americans and their achievements, written for The Fireside Schools under the auspices of the Woman's American Baptist Home Mission Society, in original cloth.

"In Women of Achievement, Benjamin G. Brawley praises the successes of African American women in various fields of endeavor. He begins with an examination of the progress of African American women in general. He claims that, among other things, they have been responsible for the rapid expansion of intellectual and charitable clubs and organizations in the black community; they have played the primary role in educating African American children; and they are making their way into the industrial labor force. Brawley points to the gains African American women are making in medicine, law, and literature, but claims that their strongest contributions are to the field of music. In the remaining chapters, Brawley offers biographical sketches of individual women 'whose achievement has been most signal and whose interest in their sisters has been unfailing,' including abolitionist Harriet Tubman, Congo missionary Nora Gordon, artist Meta Warrick Fuller, educator Mary McLeod Bethune, and activist Mary Church Terrell" (Andrew Leiter, Documenting the American South). This book was written for The Fireside Schools, which were founded by white missionary Joanna P. Moore with the goal of providing Southern African Americans with a Christian-focused education meant to uplift the community as a whole. With portrait plates before each biography. Pencil owner signature.

Creasing to a few leaves, only slightest scattered foxing, faint soiling to binding. An extremely good copy.
