In addition to the hundreds of lovely photogravures and engravings, some of the Victorian era's greatest travel writers have contributed to this set. Italian author Edmondo de Amicis' series of travel books on Europe and North Africa have come to be regarded as prime examples of Victorian travel writing. His books Constantinople, Spain, and Morocco are included in this set. Episcopal priest John Fulton's Palestine is a "detailed account of travel in the Holy Land, with many illustrations and voluminous references to the Bible and history" (Davis, America and the Holy Land, 169). French author and illustrator Charles Yriarte contributed Venice and Florence. Maria Hornor Lansdale contributed Paris; Francis Wey penned Rome, and Claude de la Roche Francis wrote London. The Rhine is from the German of Karl Stieler, H. Wachenhusen and F.W. Hacklander, translated by G.C.T. Bartley. Sets of this work are sometimes seen with more volumes covering additional countries; all of the works contained in this set are complete.
