JACKSON, Stonewall. Clipped signature. WITH: Carte de visite. No place, circa 1861. Clipped signature mounted on foamcore, measuring 1-3/4 by 3/4 inches. WITH: Carte de visite, measuring 2-1/2 by 4 inches. Both items floated, matted and framed together with a plaque, entire piece measures 12-1/2 by 10 inches. $7500.

"Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson was a West Point graduate, veteran of the Mexican War (1846–1848), instructor at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, and Confederate general under Robert E. Lee during the American Civil War (1861–1865). One of Lee's ablest commanders, Jackson earned his famous nickname during the First Battle of Manassas in 1861 when a fellow general is said to have cried out, 'There is Jackson standing like a stone wall! Rally behind the Virginians!'" (Library of Virginia). A brilliant officer and tactician Jackson was nevertheless wounded by his own men at Chancellorsville. He endured the amputation of his arm, only to die of complications just eight days later. Stonewall Jackson's "death was the greatest personal loss suffered by the Confederacy. Combining hard marches, knowledge of terrain, unexpected tactics, concentrated attacks, relentless pursuit, and unalterable faith that God was with him, Jackson brought victory and hope to his people—as he bequeathed brilliant tactics to generations of future military commanders" (ANB). The signature is post-1861 based on Jackson's use of "Major General" in his signature; he was promoted to that rank in November of 1861. Faint and unobtrusive writing (possibly offset) to bottom of Jackson photograph. Jackson cartes de visite—even unsigned—are quite scarce; we have not seen one signed.

Signature trimmed closely, light soiling to both signature and card. Extremely good condition. Beautifully presented.
