Historie of All the Romane Emperors

Pedro Mexia

MEXIA'S HISTORY OF THE ROMAN EMPERORS, 1604 FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, HANDSOMELY BOUND

MEXIA, Pedro. A Historie of All the Romane Emperors, Beginning with Caius Iulius Caesar, and Successively Ending with Rodulph the Second Now Raigning. London: Matthew Lownes, 1604. Folio, modern full brown calf gilt, raised bands. $6000.

First edition in English, enlarged and expanded over the first Spanish edition, with engraved title page and headpieces, handsomely bound in full calf-gilt.

First published in Spanish in 1545, Mexia's Historie is a key source on the later history of the extended Roman Empire, which Mexia loosely defines as kingdoms and city-states established by the Romans and still existing in his day. This expanded edition, translated into English by W. Traheron, carries the history to 1560. With engraved title page. Without first and last blank leaves, as often. Lowndes III:1541. STC 17851. Rosenbach 28:321. Contemporary ink notations on title page and to a few margins. Small numerical stamps to verso of title page and a few margins.

With two copies of leaf CCC6 and without leaf CCC5, most probably a binder's error; minor expert paper repair to title page, a few spots of staining and inkspotting to generally nice interior, binding fine. A handsome copy.
