The biographies are taken from both historic and contemporary sources, with authors including Louis Agassiz, Harriet Martineau, Henry George, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Carlyle, Hans Christian Andersen, John Greenleaf Whittier, Walter Scott and Giorgio Vasari; artists whose works illustrate these volumes include Rubens, Hogarth, Raphael, Ingres, David, Géréôme and Doré.
