First edition of this report on the finances of a fair intended to raise money in support of the United States Sanitary Commission during the Civil War, signed and dated on the front wrapper by former president Millard Fillmore, "Millard Fillmore Nov 30, 1864." The United States Sanitary Commission was an organization founded to support sick and wounded soldiers during the Civil War; its most prominent fund-raising activity was the holding of "Sanitary Fairs," often long events involving the exhibition of art, technology and historical displays. Although officially retired from public life by 1864, it is not surprising that Fillmore would have taken a keen interest in the work of the Sanitary Commission; he was close friends with Dorothea Dix, who served as superintendent of nursing in the hospitals supported and run by the Commission.
