First edition of this illustrated account of MacKay’s travels through North America, with ten tinted lithographs. A very handsome copy in contemporary calf-gilt by W. Nutt.

A popular poet, songwriter, and essayist renowned for his classic Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions, MacKay traveled through North America on a lecture tour from October 1857 through June 1858. Includes chapters on Native Americans, Irish immigrants, Mormons, "The Social and Political Aspects of Slavery," "American Literature, Art and Science," "Parties and Party Tyranny," and "The Future of the United States," among others. Some of these chapters originally appeared in the Illustrated London News under the title "Transatlantic Sketches." Bound without publisher's advertisements at rear of Volume II. Howes M118.
