In English Homes

Charles Latham

WITH HUNDREDS OF STRIKING BLACK-AND-WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS OF GRAND ENGLISH INTERIORS

LATHAM, Charles. In English Homes. The Internal Character, Furniture & Adornments of Some of the Most Notable Houses of England. London and New York: Country Life / Charles Scribner's Sons, 1907-09. Three volumes. Folio (11 by 16 inches), original blue cloth gilt, all edges gilt. $1600.

Mixed first and second edition, with hundreds of striking black-and-white photographs—many folio-sized—of the interiors of stately English homes.

This work was intended as a sort of continuation or updating of Nash's 1839 lithographic Mansions of England in the Olden Time: "In the years that have passed many things have become possible which then were not dreamt of. Not only is there riper and better knowledge, but photography, though much abused, has come as the handmaid of those who understand best what are the beauties and the splendours of old English domestic interiors." Volume I is second edition, published 3 years after the 1904 first edition; the two other volumes are first editions. Bookplates.

Interiors fine; ornate publisher's cloth with modest wear to spines, gilt bright. An impressive production.
