William Faulkner

FAULKNER, William. The Reivers: A Reminiscence. New York: Random House, (1962). Octavo, original burgundy cloth, marbled endpapers, original acetate dust wrapper. $2800.

Signed limited first edition of The Reivers, Faulkner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning last novel, number 465 of only 500 copies signed by him, published one month before his death, praised on publication as a brilliant “excursion into the pleasure of fantasy” (New York Times).

Drawing on "incidents and stories about Faulkner's own family… as easily as it scoops up previous Faulkner work," The Reivers was published only one month before his death and won the 1963 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (Karl, 1021). The novel earned immediate critical acclaim, with Orville Prescott calling it "one of the best novels Faulkner has written" and Irving Howe writing: "At its heart The Reivers is an excursion into the pleasure of fantasy, an act of comic praise to the refreshments of mischief." It reminds us Faulkner "can be a brilliant comic writer, blessed with a repertoire of gifts for folk extravaganza, dead-pan humor and surrealist high-jinks" (New York Times). Stated "First Printing," precedes the same year's trade edition. Petersen A54.2a.
