Gordon Newell

"THE VERY EPITOME OF THE MIGHT AND MAJESTY OF AMERICAN SEA POWER"

NEWELL, Gordon. SMITH, Allen E. Mighty Mo. The U.S.S. Missouri. A Biography of the Last Battleship. Seattle: Superior, (1969). Quarto, full navy leatherette gilt. $900.

Limited first edition, number 7 of 2500 copies, this copy inscribed by co-author Gordon Newell, with his inked drawing of two battleships above his signature on the limitation page, featuring hundreds of dramatic black-and-white photogravures, many full-page.

The fourth and final battleship built by the United States Navy, the Missouri, or the "Mighty Mo," supported the Iwo Jima invasion as well as raids on Japan's home islands, and served as the site of the Japanese surrender ceremony on September 2, 1945. This copiously illustrated volume recounts the ship's action-packed history in World War II and the Korean War. This work's many dramatic black-and-white photogravures depict the ship in battle and at rest, with her armaments, commanders and crew, as well as aerial views of combat. During the Korean War, the Missouri was the flagship of Vice Admiral Allan E. Smith, who co-authored this volume with Gordon Newell. With inked number, signature and drawing by Newell on the limitation page.

A very nearly fine copy, scarce inscribed.
