Eagles' War

Vern Haugland

SIGNED BY “THE FLYING GREEK,” WWII ACE STEVE PISANOS

HAUGLAND, Vern. The Eagles' War. The Saga of the Eagle Squadron Pilots 1940-1945. New York, London: Jason Aronson, (1982). Octavo, original half beige cloth, original dust jacket. $400.

First edition of Haugland’s fascinating history of the Eagle Squadron pilots—Americans and others who joined the Royal Air Force to fight against Germany before the U.S. had officially joined the war—signed by a leading member of the Eagles, combat ace Steve N. Pisanos, “The Flying Greek.”

Born in Greece as Spiros Pisanos, Steve Pisanos is a USAF Colonel who served as a fighter pilot with the Royal Air Force in the American Volunteers 71st Eagle Squadron and then with the USAAF 334th Fighter Squadron of the 4th Fighter Group. He won ten victories in combat with German pilots. Beneath his signature he has penned "268 & 71 ES RAF & 334 FS 4th FG. 10 Aerial Kills." While Haugland's engaging history narrates the experiences of the three Eagle Squadrons (71, 121, 133), Pisanos is mentioned several times, and depicted in two photographic illustrations, one standing in front of a P-47 Thunderbolt, and another in a portrait in his flight gear.

Book fine, dust jacket near-fine with only minor soiling. A handsome signed copy.
