First American edition of Ibsen’s groundbreaking play, “A Doll’s House.”

"It is with A Doll's House that Ibsen enters upon his kingdom as a world-poet… This was the play which was destined to carry his name beyond the limits of Scandinavia, and even of Germany, to the remotest regions of civilization" (William Archer). "Classic Ibsen was born with Et Dukkehjem (1879; A Doll's House), an unsentimental story of a woman's shattered illusions about marriage and loyalty" (Encyclopedia of Literature, 577). The first edition of A Doll's House was published in December 1879 in Copenhagen. It received a larger first printing (8000 copies) than any of Ibsen's previous plays and the entire edition was sold out in one month. The translation here is by Henrietta Frances Lord.
