A Spanish immigrant who had worked earlier in New Orleans and Miami, José Abeal opened his bar in Havana just before the advent of Prohibition in the United States made Cuba a destination for prosperous vacationing Americans. It quickly became one of the most famous bars in the world and a destination for celebrities from across the world. It operated for over 40 years before the Cuban revolution effectively slashed its customer base, causing it to close in the mid 60s.
