William Chorlton

THE AMERICAN GRAPE GROWER'S GUIDE, 1883, IN ORIGINAL CLOTH

CHORLTON, William. The American Grape Grower's Guide. New York: Orange Judd, 1883. Octavo, original brown cloth. $450.

Later "new" edition of this detailed and highly influential guide to growing grapes in the United States, with 32 in-text illustrations, in original cloth-gilt.

"Chorlton's guides to cultivation of European grapes under glass were based on his experiences as gardener to J.C. Green of Staten Island. Chorlton gives a long list of European grapes suitable for indoor cultivation and suggests the American varieties isabella, catawba, diana and concord for outdoors. This was a very popular treatise and there were numerous subsequent and revised editions" (Gabler G1622). The first edition was published in 1852; this 1883 edition is the first to include George Thurber's chapter on descriptions of later exotic grapes.

Slight soiling and light edge-wear to original cloth, gilt bright. A near-fine copy.
