Love Among the Haystacks

D.H. Lawrence

"STRANGE, FOREIGN, DIFFERENT FROM ORDINARY GIRLS…"

LAWRENCE, D.H. Love Among the Haystacks and Other Pieces. London: The Nonesuch Press, 1930. Octavo, original half tan buckram with yellow cloth boards, uncut. $350.

First edition of these early stories by Lawrence, number 393 of only 1600 copies printed by the renowned Nonesuch Press.

The stories in this collection were written in Germany during the summer of 1912, shortly after Lawrence eloped with Frieda. Her presence inhabits these tales, particularly in the description of a German governess in the title story who "was strange, foreign, different from ordinary girls: the rousing feminine quality in her seemed concentrated, brighter, more fascinating than in anyone he had known" (Meyers, 85). They were sent to Edward Garnett in the hopes he could find a magazine to publish them, but were not in fact printed until this posthumous collection. Also contains the stories "A Chapel Among the Mountains," "A Hay Hut Among the Mountains" and "Once" as well as a reminiscence by David Garnett. Without scarce original dust jacket.

Light soiling to original buckram, slight rubbing to spine. Extremely good.
