Henry Shaw

"THE GREAT ACCURACY OF MR. SHAW'S PENCIL STAMPS THE HIGHEST VALUE UPON THIS WORK"

(ARCHITECTURE) SHAW, Henry. Details of Elizabethan Architecture. London: William Pickering, 1839. Quarto, 20th-century three-quarter brown calf sympathetically rebacked, original burgundy morocco spine labels laid down, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. $750.

Second edition of this illustrated compendium of Elizabethan architectural highlights, with 60 engraved plates (three hand-colored) illustrating interior and exterior details, attractively bound by J. Larkins.

Henry Shaw "contributed to a number of de luxe publications promoted by antiquarian enthusiasts… [and] marketed prints from these publications from at least June 1830. His prints of details of illuminated manuscripts, artifacts, and ornament of the middle ages and later periods were published by William Pickering. Sets of prints were published as books… Plates were engraved for Shaw and mostly finished with hand-coloring, for which he employed assistants, especially after about 1840… Shaw was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1833. His reproductions of medieval and Renaissance artifacts and manuscripts established standards of finish, color, and form that the originals themselves had to match to satisfy Victorian taste" (ODNB). "The great accuracy of Mr. Shaw's pencil stamps the highest value upon this work" (Lowndes). First published in 1834. Lowndes, 2371. Bookplates; booklabel with signature of Shakespeare scholar Charles Tyler Prouty.

Only occasional foxing to a few plates, some color restoration to corners. An extremely good copy.
