Thousand Days

John F. Kennedy

"SO GLOWING AND IMPERISHABLE A MEMORY"

(KENNEDY, John F.) SCHLESINGER, Arthur M., Jr. A Thousand Days. John F. Kennedy in the White House. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1965. Octavo, original full polished red calf, black morocco spine and cover labels, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, original slipcase. $900.

Signed limited first edition of this Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of President Kennedy, number 383 of 1000 copies signed by Schlesinger, in original slipcase.

Eminent historian Schlesinger's name remains inseparable from that of the president whose administration he so influenced. More than anyone else, Schlesinger—who first befriended the Kennedy clan when he and Joseph, Jr. attended Harvad together, and who later served not only as special assistant to JFK but also as speechwriter for all three remaining brothers—cast the Kennedy White House years as America's Camelot. "From The Age of Jackson to The Age of Roosevelt to the two Kennedy biographies (which could as easily have been called 'The Age of the Kennedys'), Schlesinger can be seen to have written a gapped history of 150 years of 'triumphant liberalism'" (Boston Globe). A Thousand Days won the National Book Award in 1965 and a Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1966. Published same year as the first trade edition, no priority established. Bookplate.

Faintest rubbing to slipcase. A fine copy.
