"WHAT I HAVE THE RIGHT TO EXPECT OF THE AMERICAN BOY IS THAT HE SHALL TURN OUT TO BE A GOOD AMERICAN MAN": WONDERFUL TYPED EXCERPT FROM THEODORE ROOSEVELT'S ESSAY "THE AMERICAN BOY," SIGNED BY ROOSEVELT AND HANDSOMELY FRAMED WITH PIRIE MACDONALD'S FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF HIM

ROOSEVELT, Theodore. Typed essay excerpt ("The American Boy") signed. No place, no date. Typed essay excerpt, measuring 7 by 4-3/4; matted and framed with photographic portrait of Roosevelt, entire piece measures 12 by 21-3/4 inches. $6800.

Typed excerpt from a 1900 article by Theodore Roosevelt called "The American Boy," signed by Roosevelt, handsomely matted and framed with a photographic print of Roosevelt taken by acclaimed photographer Pirie MacDonald.

This framed piece contains both a photographic portrait of Theodore Roosevelt and an excerpt from "The American Boy," an essay published in St. Nicholas (a popular children's magazine) in May of 1900. The excerpt reads: "Of course what I have a right to expect of the American boy is that he shall turn out to be a good American man. Now, the chances are strong that he won't be much of a man unless he is a good deal of a boy. He must not be a coward or a weakling, a bully, a shirk or a prig. he must work hard and play hard. He must be clean-minded and clean-lived, and able to hold his own under all circumstances and against all comers. It is only on these conditions that he will grow into the kind of American man of whom America can be really proud. [signed] Theodore Roosevelt." The photograph was taken by Pirie MacDonald, a prominent New York city photographer and peace activist who shot thousands of pictures of distinguished Americans. MacDonald once remarked that Roosevelt was his most difficult portrait sitting. Magazine cover from Hindsight featuring Roosevelt affixed to verso.

Expert restoration to upper corner of typed excerpt not affecting signature. A handsome framed Roosevelt piece.
