WRIGHT, Thomas. Womankind in Western Europe. London: Groombridge and Sons, 1869. Quarto, early 20th-century full dark teal morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and covers, raised bands, onlaid morocco image of a medieval woman, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $1650.

First edition of Wright's thorough and engaging account of "the condition, character and manners of the [female] sex" from Celtic Britain through the 17th century, illustrated with 10 vivid chromolithographs (including frontispiece and additional title page) and numerous in-text wood-engravings, in striking full morocco-gilt with a morocco onlay of a medieval woman by Baytun.

"As a pioneer in the study of Anglo-Saxon and medieval literature and of British archaeology [Wright] deserves grateful remembrance" (DNB). Wright draws upon those particular areas of his expertise as well as other disciplines in presenting this "elaborate and careful summary of all that one of our most learned antiquaries, after years of pleasant labor on a very pleasant subject, has been able to learn… Replete with curious information on a subject well worth studying" (Allibone, 2867). Illustrated with 10 chromolithographic plates and numerous in-text wood-engravings.

A few spots of foxing to introductory leaves, binding lovely. Fine condition.
