"THE RETURN OF THE KING AND HIS COURT WAS A SIGNAL FOR UNIVERSAL JOY THROUGHOUT THE NATION"

(CHARLES II) MOLLOY, J. Fitzgerald. Royalty Restored or London Under Charles II. London: Ward & Downey, 1885. Two volumes. Octavo, early 20th-century three-quarter crushed teal morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt. $1750.

First edition of this history of London under Charles II, with etched frontispieces portraits of the monarch and ten portraits of contemporary historical figures ranging from Oliver Cromwell to Nell Gwyn, handsomely bound.

Eminently readable, this history of the reign of Charles II offers not only only the details of Charles II's reign, deposition, and restoration, but also extensive information about life in Britain during the period—from the Great Fire of London to the churches of Christopher Wren to the Great Plague. The author, J. Fitzgerald Molloy, was a prominent miscellany author of the period, often focusing on royal history.
