Love Among the Ruins

Evelyn Waugh

“THERE ARE STILL RIVERS TO DROWN IN, TRAINS—EVERY NOW AND THEN—TO PUT YOUR HEAD UNDER”

WAUGH, Evelyn. Love Among the Ruins. A Romance of the Near Future. London: Chapman & Hall, 1953. Slim octavo, original gilt-stamped red cloth, original dust jacket. $300.

First trade edition of this satirical exploration of an egalitarian Britain.

"Love Among the Ruins is a nasty little tale set in a dystopia of the near future, interesting… as a reflection of the author's prejudices, his hatred of 'progress,' of politicians, psychoanalysis, abstract art, functional architecture, and all branches of the Welfare State" (Hastings, 553). Published the same year as the signed limited edition of only 350 copies. Owner blindstamp of Thornton Sargent and his wife, Edith. Sargent established himself as a district theater manager for Skouras Bros., overseeing major first-run houses such as Grauman's (now Mann's) Chinese Theater. He became a Navy lieutenant commander in charge of the Naval Photographic Depot during World War II, producing war training films in a Hollywood studio. Sargent wrote a single screenplay and served as a member of the Academy.

Book near-fine, with only slight foxing mainly to edges of text block. Price-clipped dust jacket extremely good, with faint foxing and soiling, light wear to corners, and mild toning to spine. An attractive copy.
