Parnassus on Wheels

Christopher Morley

"WHEN YOU SELL A MAN A BOOK YOU DON'T JUST SELL HIM 12 OUNCES OF PAPER AND INK AND GLUE—YOU SELL HIM A WHOLE NEW LIFE"

MORLEY, Christopher. Parnassus on Wheels. Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Page, 1917. 12mo, original half mustard cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in custom chemise and half brown morocco slipcase. $350.

First edition, first issue, of this novel about a traveling book-selling business, in scarce original dust jacket.

Among his chief "whimsical and urbane" works, Parnassus on Wheels features an itinerant bookseller, reflecting Morley's own interest in bookselling and background as editor at Doubleday from 1913-17 (Magnusson, 1042). First issue, with space between "Y" and "e" in "Years" on page 4 and missing "l" in "goldenrod" on page 169. First-state dust jacket, with "vibrating" rather than "beating" on front panel. Morocco bookplate. Early ink owner gift inscription.

Book with interior generally quite nice and light foxing to boards, rare dust jacket with light wear and toning to extremities and several tape repairs to recto and verso of spine and joints. An extremely good copy.
