AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY VANESSA BELL

BELL, Vanessa. Autograph letter signed. London, February 12, 1938. One sheet of stationery, measuring 7 by 9 inches, writing on the recto. $1200.

Autograph letter signed by artist Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf's sister, sending a prospectus for the art school at which she was teaching.

The letter, on stationery from her London studio of 8 Fitzroy Street, reads in full: "Museum 5596. February 12, 1938. Dear Sir, I enclose a short prospectus of the school in which I teach. The address given is No 12 Fitzroy street, but it is moving in the course of the next week or two to larger premises in the Euston Road, about 5 minutes off. I shall be glad to give any further information if you may care to make an appointment with Mr. Claude Rosen who can give full details. Yours very truly Vanessa Bell." The school Bell refers to was at the time known as The School of Drawing and Painting, started in 1937 at 12 Fitzroy before moving in 1938 to 316 Euston Road; although it closed shortly after in 1939 with the outbreak of World War II, its influence was considerable enough that for a time "Euston Road School" was used as a sort of shorthand to describe artists whosework moved "away from modernist styles to a more straightforward naturalism" (Chilvers, Glaves-Smith, Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Art, 220).
