Exodus

Leon Uris

"SHALOM": EXODUS, INSCRIBED BY LEON URIS

URIS, Leon. Exodus. Garden City: Doubleday, 1958. Octavo, original blue paper boards, cartographic endpapers, original dust jacket. $750.

Second edition, issued same year as the first, of Uris’ epic panorama, inscribed by him, "For B— and N— Shalom, Leon Uris."

A "passionate summary of the inhuman treatment of the Jewish people in Europe, of the exodus in the 19th and 20th centuries to Palestine, and of the triumphant founding of the new Israel," Leon Uris' epic novel became a "record-breaking best seller" and was translated into 50 languages. "In preparing to write Exodus, Uris read nearly 300 books, underwent a physical-training program in preparation for about 12,000 miles of travel within Israel's borders and interviewed thousands of people" (New York Times). When adapted to film in 1960, director Otto Preminger broke the decade-long Hollywood blacklist by announcing Dalton Trumbo would write the screenplay. Starring Paul Newman, the movie was nominated for three Oscars. Second edition issued same year as the first: copyright page without "First Edition"; no statement of editions or printings. Owner inscribed date.

Book fine; light edge-wear to bright near-fine dust jacket.
